A brief history of the Snowshoe Cat....
The origins of the Snowshoe date back to the 1960s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A Siamese breeder, Dorothy Hinds Daugherty, bred a litter that resulted in three of the kittens having white feet. Fascinated by the outcome, Dorothy further developed the features of colourpoints with white feet by breeding these kittens with a domestic American Shorthair with tuxedo markings. This gave rise to the white inverted 'V' facial marking.
Achieving the desired colour pattern is challenging and unpredictable and because of this, breeders lost interest. So much so that in 1977 there was only one single breeder of the Snowshoe.
However, by 1989 interest sparked up again. In 1994 the International Cat Association (TICA) accepted the Snowshoe as a champion breed.
